He was hugely influential in 1972 when Donegal won the Ulster title for the first time, filling the demanding role of player-manager as they broke new frontiers. Later that year, he became Donegal's first All-Star. He was player-manager again when Donegal won the 1974 Ulster title.

The No 5 position was filled by Kerry's Tomás Ó Sé in the final cut.
