Downings duo Gallagher and McGroddy shine as DCU overpower MTU Kerry

Johnny McGroddy came off the bench for DCU

Downings man Ronan Gallagher played a starting role at centre-half back, while his clubman Johnny McGroddy came off the bench to score a point as DCU recorded a 2-22 to 0-11 point win over MTU Kerry in the first round of the Sigerson Cup.

Dublin man Greg McEnaney delivered a commanding display, including a first-half goal, to help DCU secure a dominant victory. Already part of Dublin’s senior panel, McEnaney excelled alongside clubmate Ethan Dunne in the midfield.

His 19th-minute goal, struck with determination, put DCU firmly in control at 1-7 to 0-2. By half-time, they had built a commanding 1-14 to 0-5 lead, aided by a strong wind and sharp finishing.

For MTU Kerry, making their return to the Sigerson Cup after last year’s Trench Cup triumph, the evening proved a difficult one. They struggled to find a rhythm, managing only two scores from open play throughout the game.

DCU extended their advantage in the second half, with points from Westmeath’s Senan Baker – their top scorer – and Leitrim’s Tom Prior, before Kildare’s Niall Dolan added a second goal. Dolan capitalised on a high ball from captain Ciaran Caulfield, rising above the goalkeeper to palm it into the net.

DCU’s substitutes, including Johnny McGroddy and Jack Tumulty, contributed three additional points as the game wore on.

MTU Kerry will have another chance to progress but will need to improve their scoring threat. DCU, meanwhile, impressed across the board, showcasing an effective kick-out strategy, tireless running, and pinpoint accuracy on a bitterly cold evening.
