Former Donegal player Eamon McGee is among eight GAA stars set to feature in the upcoming series of Laochra Gael.

The careers of McGee, Padraic Maher, Marc Ó Sé, Ursula Jacob, Michael Bond, Brid Stack, Ronan Clarke, and Ben & Jerry O’Connor will take centre stage in the new series.

The celebrated GAA documentary series is returning to TG4 for its 23rd season. With its hour-long episodes, the programme has enjoyed widespread acclaim, delving into the personal journeys of iconic players.

Each episode offers fresh, insightful, and occasionally surprising perspectives on the lives of these sporting greats. While their athletic achievements form the foundation of the narratives, the series ventures far beyond the playing field, offering gripping personal stories that resonate deeply with viewers.

The season finale, airing on 13 March, will showcase the story of Eamon McGee, one of Donegal’s most respected defenders.

During his playing career, GAA became a refuge for McGee, and his drive to return to peak performance culminated in winning an All-Ireland medal with Donegal in 2012 under Jim McGuinness’ management while also playing in another All-Ireland decider two years later in 2014, only to lose out to Kerry.

McGee joins few former Donegal players to have an episode of Laochra Gael about them with past episodes focusing on Donegal legends such as Anthony Molloy, Martin McHugh, Brian McEniff, and Kevin Cassidy.

The episode is directed by Edel Fox and edited by Seanie Mac Craith, with contributions from notable figures including Neil McGee, Anne McElheney, Rory Kavanagh, Brian McEniff, Joanne Gillen, Stephen O’Neill, Steven McDonnell, Kieran Cunningham, and Damien Ó Dónaill, as well as McGee’s family.

Ahead of the new season, GAA President Jarlath Burns remarked: “I am delighted to see the return of another series of Laochra Gael, which continues to showcase some of the finest players from the Gaelic games community.

"TG4 and Nemeton’s commitment to our games has been instrumental in their success, and this series enhances their offerings by promoting both the Irish language and the rich history of our sports. The enduring appeal of a 23rd series speaks volumes about its quality, and I eagerly anticipate this latest instalment. Congratulations to all involved in bringing it to life.”

The new season of Laochra Gael will kick off with Padraic Maher’s story on January 23.
