Burt hurlers who won the senior hurling championship last season
The structure of the Donegal hurling championship is set for a significant shake-up in 2025, following a proposal from Aodh Ruadh Ballyshannon.
The changes will see the senior championship expand to a six-team competition, while the intermediate championship will also undergo a restructuring.
Under the new format, the senior hurling championship will feature St Eunan’s, Burt, Buncrana, Carndonagh, Setanta, and Sean MacCumhaills.

Each team will play five round-robin matches before the top four progress to the semi-finals. Meanwhile, the bottom two teams will battle to avoid relegation to the intermediate championship, adding an extra layer of competition to the campaign.
At Intermediate level, four teams —Letterkenny Gaels, Dungloe, Aodh Ruadh Ballyshannon, and Four Masters — will compete in a revised format.
Instead of a full round-robin, teams will play just two matches, one at home and one away. The top two sides at the end of the group stage will then advance to the final, with the winner earning promotion hopes for the following season.
The changes aim to create a more competitive structure across both tiers of Donegal hurling, ensuring strong competition at senior level while providing intermediate teams with a clear pathway for development.
