Ulster University goalkeeper Ronan McGeehin, from St Eunan’s Letterkenny, played a key role in his side’s hard-fought Sigerson Cup quarter-final victory over Maynooth University.

Now, the Donegal shot-stopper has the chance to chase back-to-back titles, having been part of last year’s championship-winning team.

Donegal and fellow St Eunan's man Ciaran Moore is also on the panel but has not played since the opening round.

In a tense battle that saw the sides level on eight occasions, Ulster University edged their way to a 0-12 to 0-10 win, securing a place in the semi-finals. Late scores from Lorcan McGarrity and top scorer Conor Cush proved decisive, as the holders held firm against a determined Maynooth challenge.

The game remained finely balanced throughout, with Maynooth twice taking a two-point lead in the first half. At the break, the teams were locked at 0-7 apiece. Ulster nudged ahead early in the second half, but Maynooth controlled possession for large spells, only to struggle with their accuracy in front of goal.

Despite Maynooth’s late equaliser in the 60th minute, Ulster University kept their composure, and McGarrity’s crucial point in stoppage time sealed their place in the last four. They will now turn their focus to next week’s semi-finals as they continue their title defence.

Defending Sigerson Cup champions Ulster University will take on DCU in next week’s semi-final with the capital's side containing Ronan Gallagher at centre half-back from Downings, while his club teammate Johnny McGroddy is also on the panel.

The draw was made this morning with last season’s beaten finalists UCD set to face TUD in the other semi-final.
