Niamh Harkin set to start as Donegal make one change ahead of Westmeath clash

Niamh Harkin lifts the All-Ireland minor trophy as captain back in 2023

Donegal Ladies' manager James Daly has announced one change to the starting lineup for this weekend's away fixture against Westmeath in the LGFA Lidl National League Division 2, with Niamh Harkin set to start at half-forward, replacing Cait Gillespie.

The Naomh Padraig, Uisce Chaoin player was a part of John McNulty’s side last season having captained the Donegal minor side to All-Ireland glory against Waterford in 2023.

In their season opener last week, Donegal secured a draw against Clare, with Roisin Rodgers scoring the equaliser in the dying moments.

The match, held at Clarecastle's new astroturf facility, was a low-scoring affair, with Donegal leading 0-5 to 0-2 at halftime, aided by a strong wind.

However, Clare fought back in the second half, but Donegal's resilience ensured they left with a share of the points.

This weekend's match against Westmeath presents an opportunity for Daly's side to build on their opening performance. The team will be led by captain Roisin Rodgers, who was appointed captain earlier this month.

For Westmeath, they were given a harsh lesson on their visit to Cork in Round 1 and need a quick response.

A tie against Donegal is a tough assignment for the Lake County but they’ll hope for better fortunes on home soil.

Donegal will travel to play Westmeath in Athlone this Sunday with throw-in set for 2pm.

Donegal side to face Westmeath: Clare Friel; Shauna McFadden, Abigail Temple Asokuh, Evelyn McGinley; Shannon McLaughlin, Niamh Boyle, Niamh Carr; Roisin Rodgers, Rhianna McColgan; Niamh Harkin, Katie Dowds, Ava Walsh; Mia Bennett, Susanne White, Eva Gallagher.
