Ryan McHugh hit five points for Donegal in Killarney
Ryan McHugh says top-tier NFL football is all about picking up points as Donegal made it two from two at one of the most difficult hunting grounds in Killarney.
A 0-23 to 1-18 win over Kerry at Fitzgerald Stadium was Donegal’s first win in the Kingdom since 1988.
McHugh, with five points over an absorbing 70 minutes, says Donegal travelled at the weekend with the full intent of winning.
And with four points from four now, Donegal get set to welcome Armagh to Ballybofey next weekend as they renew rivalries with the All-Ireland champions in MacCumhaill Park.
“It’s a great victory,” said the Kilcar man after. “We came down here to win - there’s no point beating about the bush. We wanted to put in a performance but Division 1 is also about results.
“It’s a long trip down here so to get back up the road with the win is great”.
Donegal looked to be on their way seven minutes from time as they led by four. However, a Diarmuid O’Connor goal threatened to turn the result on its head.
Still, Jim McGuinness’ side dug in and a late Jamie Brennan brace and another Conor O’Donnell effort made sure they got over the line.
“You’re talking about top teams and everyone is going to have their purple patch and spell in this league. We showed grit and determination there at the end.
“It was the same last week when Dublin got back within a point and today, late on, we dug in and grinded it out”.
The big concern coming away from Kerry on Saturday evening is Michael Langan with the midfielder limping off just minutes in.
McHugh explained: “Unfortunately Michael went off. That’s sport. It looked like a hamstring but I haven’t got in yet to chat to anyone.
“That’s why the squad is even more important this season. Paddy came in very early and was excellent. All the subs did their part. Jamie Brennan also made a real contribution”.
McHugh admits that the new rules and the duress it’s putting on players in and around that middle third remains a talking point.
Still, the former Young Player of the Year says he’s looking on the bright side and is enjoying the new dimension Gaelic football is veering in.

“In the middle of it, it’s hard to describe as there is so much going on. It can be hard to get your bearings.
“It’s definitely tougher. I’m not in to GPS numbers and so on but I know I’m going to be sore tomorrow.
“When you could get 15 back you were able to get that wee breather. With the new rules you can’t do that.
“I’m staying positive. I think it’s great. I think that was a good game again today with good scores and good attacking play. That’s what you want to see”.
