Donegal just didn’t get to grips with the weather in Salthill and Galway fully deserved their victory said Colm McFadden.

Jim McGuinness side suffered a 0-21 to 0-14 loss in Pearse Stadium but in gale-force conditions, were already 0-17 to 0-1 down at the changeover.

Galway’s Matthew Tierney was red-carded just before the interval and Daniel O’Flaherty and Finnian O Laoi were black-carded during the second half but Galway did enough to carve out the win.

McFadden said after: “Conditions were really poor. When we arrived off the bus and did our walk about the wind was serious. It was really tough.

“I’ve been in places like Magheragallon and Dunfanaghy and I’ve never seen it as bad, even in those places.

“It’s a disappointing result but you have to give credit to Galway as they dealt with the conditions much better than us, especially in the first-half with those six-pointers.

“It’s mad to think being 16 points down at half-time that you still have a chance to come back into it. We felt the game was still there for us. But in the end we left too much to do.”

Donegal remain on six points and welcome Derry to Ballyshannon next weekend - a side they’ll also open the defence of their Ulster SFC title against on April 7 in Ballybofey.

“We didn’t come down here to make up the numbers and it’ll be the exact same against Derry next weekend. We’ll look to win the game," added McFadden.
