Bernard McGettigan was the hero for the winners, putting in a massive contribution, while Mark McAteer also played his part in the Donegal's side's win.
There were plenty of goal chances in the opening half with Bernard McGettigan giving Gaeil Fhánada a great start with a goal to add to Mark McAteer's opening point. McGettigan's goal was a spectacular one as he chipped the 'keeper from an angle.
McGettigan added a point from a free for a 1-2 to 0-1 lead, but Cill Chomain came back strongly to hit 1-2 to lead by a point.
Both sides had further goal chances but Gaeil Fhánada were wasteful, hitting eight wides before Seamus Nanny Friel was introduced and with his first kick, he levelled matters in the 29th minute from a 45m free.
Half-time: Gaeil Fhánada 1-3, Cill Chomain 1-3.
Gaeil Fhánada had the perfect start to the second half with points from Mark McAteer (mark) and Bernard McGettigan but their goal had a lucky escape as the Mayo side saw a ball come back off the crossbar. They got a point from the free to leave just a point in it after 39 minutes. A minute later the sides were level again.
Seamus Mac Giolla Chearra edged the Donegal side ahead but they were hit with a second goal with seven minutes to go.
The excellent Bernard McGettigan pulled a point back and after a lengthy stoppage for an injury to a Cill Chomain player, Padraig Mac Giolla Bhain levelled to take the game to extra-time.
McGettigan engineered a point for Mark McAteer and Michael Sweeney intercepted to burst forward and fist Gaeil Fhánada into a two point lead in the first period of extra-time.
A goal from Seamus Mac Giolla Cheara put the Donegal side five clear in the second period but Cill Chomain kept coming back to hit four points without reply and cut the lead to the minimum. But Gaeil Fhánada held on after the Mayo side failed to convert a late free.
