Kilcar in touching distance of Division 1 final following win over Killybegs

The south-west derby was level at half-time in Towney, only for the home side to turn the screw in the second half to end up comfotable winners

A power-packed second half display from Kilcar simply blew away neighbours Killybegs in Towney, in a match where Eoin McHugh made his first appearance of the season.

Kilcar 3-17
Killybegs 1-7

But the Fishermen were more than a match for the home side in a very evenly contested opening half that finished all square, Kilcar 0-8 Killybegs 1-5.

However, an early goal just after half-time as Andrew McClean punched a ball across the Killybegs square and the ball fell at the feet of Conor O’Donnell, who had a simple tap in, proved crucial. There may have been a suspicion of a square ball but it was all downhill for Killybegs thereafter.

Dara O’Donnell and Paddy McBrearty got the remaining goals in a most one-sided second half where Killybegs could only register two points - both from the boot of Jack McSharry.

Man of the match Ciaran McGinley opened the scoring for the home side, and this was quickly added to by McBrearty as Killybegs levelled matters through the impressive McSharry and Conor Cunningham by the fifth minute.

McBrearty and McGinley made it 0-4 to 0-2 after 10 minutes. But a well-organised Killybegs were growing into the game and they rocked Kilcar with a coolly finished goal from Cunningham midway through the half.

The final quarter was real end-to-end stuff with McGinley, Dara O’Donnell, Ryan McShane on target for the locals, with Cunningham hitting three fine points to tie matters at the break.

However, Conor O’Donnell’s early goal seemed to deflate Killybegs as the home side rattled over points from McGinley, McBrearty, Mark McHugh, Jason Campbell and Daniel Lyons to lead by 1-17 to 1-5 by the 51st minute.

Killybegs were unable to get out of their half as the Kilcar machine clicked into action and this game was well over when Dara O’Donnell palmed home a pass across the square from McBrearty to make the score Kilcar 2-17 Killybegs 1-5. McSharry hit two fine points as rampant Kilcar ran the bench and ran out easy winners.

Mark McHugh, who had a fine second half set up McBrearty for Kilcar’s final goal with McSharry pointing for Killybegs to end the scoring.

Kilcar are now one game away from a Division 1 final as they face Glenfin away next weekend while this very youthful Killybegs side face a big battle to avoid relegation.
