Westmeath manager brings Tailteann Cup to Kilcar teen in hospital

Daniel McCloskey, a student at Coláiste na Carraige who plays with Kilcar and is a member of the Donegal U-16 academy, suffered a  serious foot injury in June and is recovering at Galway University Hospital, where he was visited by the Westmeath manager on Sunday

Westmeath manager Jack Cooney certainly brought a smile to the face of a Kilcar teenager on Sunday when he visited him in hospital with the Tailteann Cup.

Daniel McCloskey is a student at Coláiste na Carraige, where he lined out in the Faul Cup final against Ballybay CC at the Bawnacre Centre in Irvinestown in February. A player with Kilcar and a member of the Donegal U-16 academy, he suffered a  serious foot injury in June and is recovering at Galway University Hospital.

Daniel is a cousin of 2012 All-Ireland winner Mark McHugh and current Donegal player Ryan McHugh, with whom he often attends club senior training with at Kilcar. 

“I’ve a cousin called Daniel McCloskey and he was supposed to play for the Donegal academy on Friday night who was involved in a very freak accident on Friday night in Killybegs,” Mark McHugh told the Donegal GAA podcast on Ocean FM last month. “He was airlifted to Galway where he has been recovering. He’s a talented footballer and he’s a great Kilcar man, an unbelievable worker.”

In the inaugural Tailteann Cup final on Saturday, Westmeath defeated Cavan 2-14 to 1-13 to lift the title. Westmeath are managed by Rory Gallagher’s former assistant with Donegal, Cooney, whose wife Elaine Byrne is from Kilcar.
