Glenfin aiming to get the wheels turning for Gaoth Dobhair visit

Glenfin were beaten 2-13 to 1-13 last weekend at Killybegs but have shown enough this season to suggest they're far from done yet

Glenfin aiming to get the wheels turning for Gaoth Dobhair visit

Gerard Ward and his Glenfin side welcome Gaoth Dobhair on Saturday evening

One thing that Glenfin teams have always had, and that is character in spades - and they’ll be drawing on that experience when they face Gaoth Dobhair on Saturday evening.

Glenfin went down to Killybegs in Fintra last Sunday on a 2-13 to 1-13 margin, although they can take solace from their fighting spirit that took them back to within two points late on.

It looked grim as they trailed a pretty rampant Killybegs by 2-10 to 0-8 by the 40th minute.  Lesser sides would have gone quietly into the sunset.  But never Frank McGlynn and Co and they hauled Killybegs back to a 2-12 to 1-13 margin with the finish in sight. However it was Killybegs, for whom Hugh McFadden scored 2-6, who won out.

Disappointed joint-manager David Carroll saluted his charges never say die spirit and added that he was also disappointed by the concession of a quick early goal.

“We came in after a four week break with just a few challenge games-we possibly were caught a bit cold at the start and they got that goal very early on and that set the pattern for the game,” he said. “It just shows you how effective this tactic can be, a simple direct ball into the full forward line, especially if you have a good target man and they certainly had one in Hugh McFadden today.

“They imposed their game on us and we never could get within three points of them and that was a great cushion for them. But in the second half we were eight points down, but we showed great character in bringing it back to two.

“We had a bit of momentum but a few things went against us like the break of a ball which you need in those situations. But we will dust ourselves down and get focused for Gaoth Dobhair next Saturday evening”.

“We face a tough challenge and that is a game we will be aiming to win.  They are an established side, but we will take the positives from this game with that great comeback.

“Score difference could come into it - we had a positive second half and we will learn from this experience”.
