St Mary's Convoy lost out to Buncrana in their first IFC match of 2022
John Toye scored a goal and four points as St Mary’s bounced back from last week’s heavy defeat to Naomh Columba to see off Naomh Brid at St Mary’s Park on Saturday evening.
St Mary’s, Convoy 1-9
Naomh Brid 0-9
Toye’s early goal was to prove the difference between the teams in what was a close encounter throughout. St Mary’s led 1-4 to 0-4 at half-time.
And Joe McGill, Toye and Corey Lee Bogan added early points on the resumption to stretch the St Mary’s lead out to six points. They led 1-8 to 0-5 at the three quarter mark before Naomh Brid mounted a comeback to reduce the margin back to three. But St Mary’s held on for a morale boosting win and the first two points in three outings in the championship.
The result means St Mary’s are back in the championship race and a chance to make it through to the last eight knockout stages. A win or even a draw away to Red Hughs, next Saturday night in the last of the group games may be enough to secure a quarter-final place.
Meanwhile, the result all but ended the road for Naomh Brid’s championship ambitions for 2022. They host Division Two champions Downings next weekend, in their final group game in Trummon.
