A second win from four means that Red Hughs progress in the Donegal IFC at the expense of their neighbours St Mary's Convoy

Red Hughs come through 11 minutes injury time to beat St Mary's Convoy in IFC

A snappy third quarter where they hit four points on the bounce was the platform for this precious victory for Red Hughs over their neighbours Convoy in a typically feisty affair in Pairc Aodh Ruadh, Killygordon.

Red Hugh’s 0-12
St Mary’s Convoy 0-9

The impressive accuracy of the two-footed Jack Gillespie was a big part in the home side easing into a 0-11 to 0-6 lead by the 42nd minute - after leading by a mere point on a score of 0-7 to 0-6 at the break. But they could only score one more point as the game degenerated into a litany of hold ups.

Referee Connie Doherty played 11 minutes of extra time as darkness fell and Convoy tried hard for an equaliser, and he also felt it necessary to dispense with the services of one of the umpires in the 19th minute. But there were a number of reasons for the extra time most notably a five-minute delay for what looked like a serious rib injury for Red Hughs wing forward Tim Callaghan.

Second half substitute Paddy Dolan had a big impact for the visitors who laid siege to the home side's goals in added time. Donegal defender Stephen McMenamin was outstanding in those final frenetic moments. Gillespie opened the scoring for Red Hugh’s from a free after three minutes.  This was quickly cancelled by Convoy’s John Toye.

Gillespie and Joe McGill of Convoy traded points in a stalemate before four points on the spin put the home side into a 0-6 to 0-2 thanks to Gillespie and the lively Jack Bradley. Convoy had a great chance of a goal in the 17th minute when Toye blazed wide after McGill intercepted a James Doherty clearance to set up a great score.

We had drama of a different kind in the 19th minute when one of the umpires awarded a 45 to Red Hugh’s after a Convoy player caught the ball over the endline. The other umpire who was on the far side of the post signalled a wide.

Referee Doherty then appeared to consult with the first umpire, overruled him and that umpire was told to leave his position. It is understood the umpire who was asked to leave his position was not one of the umpires that the referee brought with him.

Convoy hauled themselves back in contention in the final ten minutes with points from McGill and Raymond McNamee to leave the home side leading by 0-7 to 0-6 despite dominating for most of the opening half. But they emerged in a much brisker fashion after the break with three points from Gillespie and one from Bradley to put them into a 0-11 to 0-6 lead.

Paddy Dolan narrowed the gap just before the major injury to Callaghan as the game ended on a scrappy note. Convoy tried hard to snatch a late draw-but Red Hugh’s held on and are now in the quarter finals while Convoy are in a relegation play off.
