‘Why aren't Islander’s treated fairly and why don’t they have a fire service?’

Calls have been made to install appropriate fire services on Tory Island.

Currently, an old trailer that was used for sheep houses the island’s fire hose.

Councillor Micheál Choilm Mac Giolla Easbuig highlighted the issue at the Glenties Municipal District Meeting, stating that the island has a red light service but no blue light services.

“A house could burst into flames quickly,” he said. “Why aren't Islander’s being treated fairly and why don’t they have a proper fire service. We are lucky not to have had any fires this year, but it's important to plan for coastal fires.

Tory is situated approximately 14.5 kilometres from the mainland, off the north-west coast. Due to the island’s unique and remote location, it is not easily accessible by emergency services. Although Donegal County Fire Service serves the island, firefighting equipment is essential.

“We need council support for first responders, not taking away from the emergency services and the good work they do,” Mac Giolla Easbuig added.
