Ryan Griffin opened with a 66 at Lahinch

Ballybofey & Stranorlar golfer Ryan Griffin is joint leader after the first round of the esteemed Pierse Motors Volkswagen South of Ireland Amateur Open Championship held at Lahinch.

Griffin, who recently performed well for the International team in the Arnold Palmer Cup, also at Lahinch, scored an impressive 66, which included an eagle and six birdies.

He is tied at the top with Ian O’Connell from Castleknock who was thrilled to match him and go bogey-free in the worst of the afternoon weather.

He made an eight-footer for a two at the eighth, tapped in from short range for another birdie at the ninth, then made a 30-footer at the 10th to go three-under before making another hat-trick of birdies at the 13th, 14th and 15th

Griffin, who previously competed in the LIV Golf Promotion Series event in Abu Dhabi last season, is set to begin his Masters' studies at Maynooth University.
