Convoy native Ryan Griffin is leading the way for the Irish team at Ruuhikoski Golf Club in Finland
Donegal native and Ballybofey & Stranorlar Golf Club member Ryan Griffin is among the Irish contingent competing at the World University Championship, which began on Tuesday at Ruuhikoski Golf Club in Finland.
Griffin, who recently participated in the Pierse Motors VW-sponsored South of Ireland Amateur Open but was forced to withdraw midway through the week last July due to a back injury sustained after a fall at Lahinch, is part of a five-player Irish team led by Barry Fennelly.
The Convoy man led the way for the Irish early on finishing Day 1 with a two-under-par, sitting in eighth place overall, three shots behind the leader.
Griffin is joined by fellow Maynooth University golfers David Kitt from Athenry and Simon Walker from Roscommon, both of whom are expected to make a strong impact during the tournament.
The women’s team includes Ulster University representatives Kate Dwyer (Rossmore) and Ellen O’Gorman (Laytown & Bettystown), ensuring that both Irish universities are well-represented in Finland.
The event will run until Friday, with all eyes on the Irish team as they aim to make their mark on the international stage.
