Martin Terry and Brian Dolan
Brian Dolan’s Captain’s Week proved very successful with ladies and gents turning out in great numbers to support Brian.
Competitions started on Wednesday when Seamus McGee pipped Peadar Curran to win the shootout. Well done to Seamus, a very popular winner.
The Captain’s Scramble took place on Friday, where the captain's own team came out on top with a fine score of -2 in tricky conditions. Brian was joined by Chris McCallion, Seamus McGee, and his 93-year-old father, Hugh, on the winning team.
Mark McGinley, Michael Gallagher, Kevin Coyle and Helena McClafferty came second on -1 and Manus McClafferty, John Murphy, Roisin McGee and James Mangan followed in third place.
The ladies' competition was held on Thursday and Saturday and the scoring was keenly contested. Roisin McGee came out on top again with a fantastic 38pts.
Frances McGeever was second on 36pts BOT, 3rd was Margaret Mulhern, also with 36pts, the nines went to Caroline McGee and Noirín O’Grady with 22pts and 17pts, and Terea McKinney won the non-qualifier prize with 27pts. Caroline McGee won the longest drive, and Sadie Marie Curran won nearest the pin.
The main event took place on Saturday with an 18-hole stableford qualifier in the morning, with 12 golfers qualifying for a 9-hole playoff in the evening. The top 3 heading into the playoff were Brian 'Bomber' McGee on 39pts, one shot ahead of both Vincent Collum and Owenie 'Scotch' McFadden.
After a few holes of the playoff, it became apparent that first place was between two golfers, Martin Terry and Francis Boyle. Scoring ebbed and flowed throughout the 9, but when Francis posted a total of 56pts in the second group, Martin knew he needed a par on the last to win.
He duly obliged with an excellent up and down from the front of the green to claim the year's first major. Well done, Martin, some very solid golf on the day, considering the tough wind conditions.
Full results from the day: 1st: Martin Terry 57pts, 2nd: Francis Boyle 56pts, 1st Gross: Brian Geaney 43pts BOT, 2nd Gross: Chris McCallion 43pts, 3rd: Brendan Rodgers 53pts BOT, 4th: Owenie Scotch McFadden 53pts BOT, 5th: Vincent Collum 53pts BOT, 6th: Brian McGee 52pts, Best 18: James Mangan 34pts, Beginner: Kevin Coyle 37pts, Distance: Sean MacIntyre 33pts, Visitor: Daniel McColgan 32pts, Long Drive: Gerry Doohan, Nearest Pin: Brendan Rodgers.
The club would like to thank the ladies club for all their help on the Saturday, and throughout the week, and to Michael and the team in the Strand Road Bar and Kitchen for the delicious food and presentation venue on Saturday night. A special thanks to all the Dolan Family for all their work in creating a great atmosphere around the club over the course of the week.
