Major work ahead for the village of Newtowncunningham
A project that could see major developments in the village of Newtowncunningham has been given the green light by Donegal County Council.
On Monday members of the council approved the carrying out of works in respect of its Main Street Active Travel Project.
Local representative Cllr Paul Canning proposed the decision and asked the council to liaise with all the relevant stakeholders, particularly the local national school and keep them informed of all their procedures and timelines.
He also asked for assurance from the council that it would meet with the school authorities in particular prior to any work being done as the safety of the school users was paramount during construction.
“I want to be sure any work that is planned is in keeping with the school’s own plans for development and I would like that to be minuted as part of the Part 8 decision.
“This is a game changer for Newtowncunningham, it's a major development for the village.
“We have town centre plans and traffic calming measures.”
Cllr Canning thanked the team that had been involved with the public in the project over the past six months adding the design team and the council met locals recently for a very successful open day.
“I think that’s something we need to do more, speak to the people on the ground, tell them what is happening and get buy-in.
“This will change the whole look of the village and the people are very happy to support it and the school is on board with everything as well as long as they are kept informed,” he said.
The action was seconded by Cllr Terry Crossan.
