Councillor Micheal Cholm is behind the implementation of a safe designated pedestrian crossing in Dungloe, which comes into effect tomorrow

The first traffic lights in West Donegal will be officially switched on tomorrow, Wednesday.

There has been a new pedestrian crossing point installed on the N56 at Carnmore, Dungloe, which is the first of its kind in the area.

“They are the first traffic lights in West Donegal, the first in the Glenties Municipal District,” Councillor Micheal Cholm MacGiolla Easbuig told DonegalLive.

Road users are advised by Donegal County Council that the traffic lights at the new pedestrian crossing will be in operation from 11 am tomorrow Wednesday, December 13.

The traffic light installation will make way for a safe designated pedestrian crossing with decreased delays as requested by members of the local community.

“The traffic lights came about in two stages, there was no footpath on the left-hand side up to SuperValu and the locality requested a designated pedestrian crossing,” Cllr MacGiolla Easbuig added.

“As the local councillor, I went about my business but I would like to apologise for the length of time it has taken.

“But I would like to thank everyone involved in the community and the council for the funding we received. I would also like to extend a special thank you to Bridget ‘Sissy’ O’Donnell for supporting this proposal.

Meanwhile, although Dungloe is the first to receive this implementation, Cllr MacGiolla Easbuig added that he hopes it is a catalyst for other towns and villages in the area.

“There are other areas that require traffic lights which need to be identified such as An Fál Carrach (Falcarragh), Loch an Iúir (Loughanure) and príomhshráid, An Clochán Liath (Dungloe, Main Street) and other areas that need designated crossing points,” Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig added.
