Animals in Need is warning of the presence of illegal snares posing a serious risk of injury and death to pets and wildlife.

Volunteers managed to catch one such animal and bring her to a vet for treatment of horrific injuries.

A spokesperson said: “We have had a report of an injured cat in the Fanad area. Sadly, it turned out to have been caught in an illegal snare.

“This poor cat was a feral cat, and it took three days to catch her - three full days of suffering with a wire snare caught around her body, digging into her body. Imagine the pain.

“Luckily, she was caught and seen at the vets, where it took wire cutters to release her.

“These snares cause a lot of damage to wildlife as well as causing a danger to pets.

“Keep your pets safe.”

The charity says the matter has been reported to the gardaí.
