Inishowen Credit Union staff member Ria McClenaghan [Moville branch] presents a sponsorship cheque to Sharon Thompson and David Simpson, for the Greencastle Write Night.
Could you be the next Roddy Doyle, Brian Friel or Hilary Mantel? Aspiring writers are invited to join a new Inishowen literary initiative, to help boost creativity and collective inspiration.
‘Greencastle Write Night’ takes place on Tuesdays at Greencastle Community Centre, with the next event scheduled for July 8, from 7pm until 8.30pm.
During Write Night, writers of any genre, experience, or style write silently together for two thirty-minute sessions, with an optional short break in between.
One of those involved is Moville author Sharon Thompson, who has published a series of acclaimed novels in recent years.
“There are constant enquiries about local writing groups, so there is a definite need for a space for writers to write together in Inishowen,” she explains.
“Our Write Nights have a productive and friendly atmosphere, and there will be many more.”

Sharon says the literary gatherings are open to everyone. Prompts will be provided to help inspire ideas, or writers can simply follow their own topics instead.
“This will be a great opportunity for writers to have an organised, scheduled, silent writing space. There is no pressure to share your work or discuss your writing with others. Set this time aside and start something new with the provided prompts, or begin or finish your special project amidst like-minded people,” Sharon suggests.
Meanwhile, the Moville novelist has also praised the Inishowen Credit Union for its sponsorship of the event.
“We would like to thank Inishowen Credit Union for their generous sponsorship, which acknowledges the developing literary scene,” Sharon said.
A spokesperson for Inishowen Credit Union said they were delighted to be associated with a fantastic initiative to further nurture and promote Inishowen’s creative talent.
“We are very happy and proud to support this great cause, which gives writers the time and space to write, as well as an opportunity to showcase their work live,” they said.
Greencastle Write Night has a €5 entrance fee, with self-service refreshments available. For further details, check out the ‘Words by the Water’ Facebook page or email: greencastlewritenight@gmail.com
