The Tánaiste, Simon Harris, said visiting Donegal has been “informative” for him, as he spent time in the fishing port of Killybegs, and climbing Errigal.

His visit to Killybegs was designed to show his support for the fishing industry, and local Senator, Manus Boyle, helped organise the visit of Simon Harris and accompanied him during his time in Killybegs on Wednesday, August 13.

A social media post by the Fine Gael leader read: “Good to engage with the fishing industry today in Killybegs. In these uncertain times, we need to support our Irish industries.

“We should be proud of our fishing sector. Today, the fishing organisations took me out on a trawler and we discussed what needs to happen to ensure the future of the sector and to make ports like Killybegs busy again.

“Thanks to Senator Manus Boyle for arranging this.”

This was not Simon Harris’ first visit to Killybegs, as he also visited the Killybegs campus of the Atlantic Technological University in January 2024, whilst he was Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science.

During that visit, he noted that it was “inspiring” to have visited the fishing town of Killybegs.

Harris then posted a second video of himself and a group climbing Donegal’s highest mountain, Errigal.

He said: “I am continuing my visit to Donegal. I am visiting fishermen, meeting with families affected by MICA, and meeting with our Fine Gael council team, with our Senators, Manus Boyle and Nikki Bradley.

“Today, I have decided to come up Errigal with a number of members of the local community, to look at the work that Failte Ireland has done to basically protect the mountain from erosion.

“This is an incredibly beautiful spot, even on a foggy, cloudy day like this today. It is great to see so many people out and about, getting their exercise done, local people but also people coming from further afield.

“It is really important that, as a Government, we continue to invest in our walkways, in our mountain ways, and protecting our coast from erosion as well.

“It has been really informative to be here with locals today, and it is great to get a bit of fresh air too.”
