A Laghey-based nursing home was commended by the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) for being fully compliant with all regulations during a recent inspection.

Aras Mhic Shuibhne, a 47-resident care home in Mullanasole Barr, was praised for the care provided, governance, and facilities available.

The designated centre provides 24-hour nursing care, with both long-term (continuing and dementia care) and short-term (assessment, convalescence, and respite care) residents.

An inspection was carried out by HIQA inspector, Nikhil Sureshkumar, who graded the designated centre as fully compliant in all regulations that were monitored.

Sureshkumar stated: “The overall feedback from residents was that they were happy about the care and support provided by staff.

“Some residents’ comments were that this was a good centre and that they were lucky to be in this centre.”

Regarding residents’ lives at Aras Mhic Shuibnne, Sureshkumar noted they had “personalised” bedrooms with “sufficient personal storage space” and their clothes were “laundered internally” with a “system in place to ensure that the residents’ clothes were returned to them in a timely manner.”

Sureshkumar also noted: “A schedule of activities was made available to residents, and staff supported residents to take part in meaningful activities. The inspector found residents engaged in activities such as puzzles, card games, and gentle exercises on the day of inspection.”

The conduct and management of staff was also highlighted by Sureshkumar, who pointed out there were regular staff meetings, and “sufficient numbers of suitably qualified staff available to support residents' assessed needs.”

As Aras Mhic Shuibhne were judged to be fully compliant in all categories marked by Sureshkumar, there was no response from the designated centre on how to improve their services.
