Judge warns Donegal Town man after setting €200 fine for driving without insurance

Ballyshannon Courthouse

A Donegal Town resident was warned by Judge Éiteáin Cunningham not to drive without insurance, after being fined €200 at a Donegal District Court sitting.

Conor Patrick David Lang, 20, of 13 Mill Race Crescent, Donegal Town, was fined by Judge Éiteáin Cunningham at Ballyshannon Court, €200 with five months to pay, however, he was not disqualified from driving.

Lang entered a plea after he was charged with being the user of a car on the N15 in Birchhill, outside of Donegal Town, on December 28, 2024, for which neither the vehicle owner nor an exempted person would be liable for injury caused by the negligent use of the vehicle at that time, and for which there was not an approved policy of insurance, and therefore found contrary to Section 56 (1) & (3) of the Road Traffic Act 1961, as amended by Section 18 of the Road Traffic Act, 2006.

Mr Gerry McGovern, solicitor for Lang, told the Court: “He is a young man who has no previous convictions.

“The loss of his licence is going to cost him dearly. He is 20 years of age and he is involved in the tyre business. He has to go out on site.”

Judge Cunningham noted Lang’s lack of previous convictions and warned him that if he came back to Court for a similar offence, there would be a four-year mandatory disqualification from driving.
