Replacement commercial garage planned near Laghey
Planning permission has been sought from Donegal County Council for the construction of a new commercial garage for vehicle repairs near Laghey.
The submitted application proposes for the demolition of an existing commercial garage that has been deemed “no longer fit for purpose” with the construction of a new commercial garage on site, and the provision of a new site entrance access road along with onsite parking, and connection to all existing site services and associated site development works.
A site in the townlands in Ardbane or Laghy Barr TD, to the east of Laghey, is proposed location for the new commercial garage.
McCabe Architects, on behalf of the applicant, stated: “The existing garage/workshop is no longer fit for purpose due to its limited internal floor area and poor working conditions.
“The restricted size of the building requires the main roller shutter door to remain open during vehicle repairs, which is particularly problematic during winter months and adversely affects the applicant’s ability to operate efficiently and safely.
“The proposed development will provide a larger, modern garage/workshop on the footprint of the existing structure. The increased floor area will allow for adequate internal working space for vehicle repairs, improved storage for tools, equipment, and parts, safer and more efficient operation of the business, and improved working conditions and welfare for the applicant and employee.

“The proposed garage is designed to remain compatible with the existing use of the site, representing a replacement and improvement of an established lawful use, rather than an intensification of activity.”
Regarding vehicular access, McCabe Architects commented: “At present, customer and service traffic to the workshop passes in close proximity to the family dwelling, which raises concerns regarding privacy, safety, and residential amenity.
“To address this issue, a new vehicular entrance is proposed to the west of the site, providing direct access to the workshop located to the rear.
“The proposed site works include a new dedicated vehicular access to the workshop, separation of commercial and residential traffic, perimeter fencing to clearly define and enclose the workshop area, and improved safety for residents, visitors, and customers.
“These measures will significantly enhance site layout, reduce potential conflicts between residential and commercial uses, and improve overall site functionality.”
Donegal County Council has set a decision due date for the submitted application for February 25, 2026.
