HIQA praises Letterkenny adult residential service for regulations compliance

Killylastin Residential Service is in the outskirts of Letterkenny

A Letterkenny residence for adults with intellectual disabilities was praised by the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) in an inspection for being fully compliant with the Care and Support of Residents in Designated Centres for Persons with Disabilities Regulations.

Killylastin Residential Service was subject to an unannounced risk inspection by a HIQA inspector in September 2025. It was judged compliant on Governance and Management, Notification of Incidents, Quality and Safety, General Welfare and Development, Risk Management Procedures, Positive Behavioural Support, Protection, and Residents’ Rights.

The service is a developing residential service in Letterkenny, provided by Praxis Care, for three to four adults. It provides group housing and shared communal facilities while each individual has their own bedroom.

Residents are supported by a team of support workers during the day, and staff are available 24/7.

The HIQA inspector, Úna McDermott, noted: “This service was well governed and lines of accountability were clearly defined.

“While there were challenges relating to compatibility, the provider had a plan to address this and consistency of care, support and safety was maintained in the interim.

“The provider had maintained good governance arrangements through routine audits and unannounced visits.

“Findings from audits were recorded on a quality improvement plan. Actions to address issues found were documented and completed within a specific time frame. This ensured that they were addressed promptly and the service was continually improved.”
