Ciaran Haden, 5th Year, St Columba's Stranorlar, was a county winner in the Imagining Ireland 2116 art competition, with his art teacher Mr O'Donnell.
In addition to the Proclamation Day Flag raising events which have taken place across the county this month, the Donegal Education Centre has helped students find out what 1916 means to them through art and historic research projects and competitions.
DEC director, Jacqueline O'Reilly Dillon told the Democrat that student really excelled themselves. She said they've seen some wonderful creativity at work, and some very in-depth research. It was, she added, quite impressive and very difficult to judge the winners. Just a few of the county winners and finalists are highlighted here.
Another 1916 project the DEC has been involved is the Donegal Schools Centenary Anthem, which is part of the larger Donegal Anthems Project, The project, co-ordinated by music teacher Donna Harkin, features secondary school students composing an original piece of muisic and professionally recording to CD.
The anthem expresses, through music, what life is like in Donegal in 2016. As well as highlighting how life has changed over the past 100 years since 1916, this project acts as a time capsule, a tangible and vibrant product that will give a scintillating experience of our time in 100 years from now, and beyond.
Much of the DEC's work involves supporting teachers, through courses and materials and the centre has been delighted have a wonderful resource to work with this year in Donegal County Council's The ‘County Donegal in 1916’ History & Heritage Education Pack.
