The weather gods delivered the goods today, with perfect conditions to see the autumn equinox at its very best.

Donegal photographer Bren Whelan was out with his camera, ready and waiting at the Grianan of Aileach stone fort perched on a hill high above Burt.

He captured this wonderful shot, clearly showing how the aptly named Stone Fort of the Sun was built to align with the sun's movements.

On just two days every year, on the spring and autumn equinoxes, the rising sun aligns with the monument and rays beam through the entrance, dividing the structure in two. The result is a spectacular sight, beautifully captured by Bren Whelan.
