Hundreds attend anti-Brexit rallies in border regions

Hundreds of people from the border region came out to demonstrate against Brexit this afternoon.

Rallies took place in Carrickcarnon, Moybridge, Aghalane, Belcoo, Lifford and Bridgend. The message from all rallies was loud and clear, the people of the border region do not want to leave the European Union (EU).

Today’s events took place after British Prime Minister, Theresa May, signalled she will trigger Article 50, a process which would begin the UK’s exit from the EU. The move sparked fears that ‘hard borders’ would return to the border region.

Speaking at today’s rally, in Bridgend, the Chief Executive of Enterprise North West, John McGowan said that ‘Brexit’ made the entire region poorer.

He said: “I agree that Letterkenny will be a ghost town come December if the currency keeps falling and I’m just looking for leadership, so we all can stand up and say no to Brexit.”

The businessman added that Brexit will “destroy the economy”.

Unity call made in Belcoo

In Belcoo, County Fermanagh, MEP Marian Harkin called on all political parties, to unite behind the anti-Brexit campaign.

Ms. Harkin said, "I don't think people realise the full implication yet - this will be catastrophic for people in this region in this area and in the island as a whole.

"It will affect every strand in the community - areas like this depend on tourism and agriculture which will be greatly affected.
