A crew of local motoring enthusiasts have played a special role in a new book on the history of the iconic Land Rover.
The adventurers that go under the name the “Donegal Trekkers”, consisting of garage owners Leslie O’Donnell, Letterkenny and Denis Ferry, Creeslough and Kilmacrenan based photographer Paul Doherty, feature in an entire chapter of a new book on the history of Land Rover by renowned adventurer, author and presenter, Ben Fogle.
The team have been making waves in the local motoring world since they unveiled their amazing Defender that can travel on water, as well as the many adventure trips they have made in recent years.
Denis explained that it was a simple tweet response on social media that enticed Ben to get in touch to learn more about their unique vehicle, as he was writing a book on the famous vehicle at the time.
When the TV star posted images of an experiment he was involved with at sea, Denis responded by messaging Ben to say “We have the perfect Land Rover to go whale watching”.
Within minutes, Mr Fogle got in contact and soon had made plans to visit Donegal to check out their vehicle.
In his new book “Land Rover: The story of the car that conquered the world”, Ben dedicates a full 15-page chapter to the lads and their Land Rover.
Denis added that it was nice to get the recognition for the vehicle and the local area.
“We took him off Portnablagh and over to Killahoey beach, where we got totally submerged, then back over to the pier. He recalls the whole day in the book and he remembered every detail of it,” he stated.
Leslie said that himself and Denis recently attended the launch of the book in London, while Paul Doherty, whose photographs appear in the book, remained behind. He had been booked to photograph a wedding the following morning and did not want to jeopardise the happy couple’s images on their big day in case of travel delays.
Leslie stated: “Paul stayed as he didn’t want to get delayed coming back. The launch event took place in a quirky bookshop in Notting Hill.
“There is a full chapter on his trip to Donegal and the whole book tells the story of Land Rover's history”.
