Donegal sends best wishes to Gay Byrne as he reveals doctors think he may have cancer

Legendary broadcaster Gay Byrne, who spent so much of his free time in Donegal, has revealed he may have been diagnosed with cancer.

Gay and his wife Kathleen Watkins, have had a life-long love affair with Donegal which has been well documented. In particular they had a real soft spot for a little place near Dungloe which for many summers they used as a base to relax and enjoy the spectacular scenery of Donegal and from there built close friendships with so many people in the county.

Gay and Kathleen would be spotted regularly out walking and enjoying the local scenery and for many he was regarded as 'one of the locals' such was his relationship with the area and the community.

Earlier today at the end of his Lyric FM programme, Gay told fellow presenter Evelyn Grant that doctors “think they may have discovered a bit of cancer in the prostate and they’re afraid that it may have moved up into the small of the back.”

He confirmed he is due to undergo further tests.

The 82-year-old added, “I’ve had the most wonderful, fantastic, robust, good health all my broadcasting life. It’s my turn now. Many, many people much worse off. Thank you for your good wishes.”

As social media went into overdrive with thousands commenting on the news and wishing him good health, we're quite certain the people of Donegal are very keen  to sendtheir best wishes to Gay tonight.
