Brilliant voluntary effort in Bundoran sees hundreds of dead fish removed

Bags of dead fish collected from the Thrupenny Pool, Bundoran by volunteers o Friday evening

Community spirit was alive and well in Bundoran on Friday night as a number of locals gathered at the Thrupenny Pool to help with the clearance of a large amount of dead fish which had become trapped there following the shoreline incident earlier in the week.

Hundreds of fish became trapped hehttps://www.donegaldemocrat.ie/!panel/content/content_insert.jsp?id=327458re in the popular outdoor pool just below Waterworld and on Friday morning last were practically all that was visible to anyone walking past the pool. On Friday afternoon it was decided that the situation couldn’t remain for the holiday weekend or for the tide to “do its thing”. The decision was reached to drain the pool of water and manually remove the fish.

A call was put out and a number of local volunteers turned up with rakes, shovels and buckets in order to remove the fish from the pool.  The team worked from just after 6pm until 10pm to ensure that every last fish was removed from the popular bathing area. The fish were gathered and bagged and taken away by Donegal County Council.

Michael McMahon Chairperson of Bundoran Tidy Towns helped to coordinated the effort and paid tribute to those who helped out on Friday night.

"We are very thankful to the group of locals who gave up their time on the start of a busy bank holiday weekend to ensure that our visitors weren’t subjected to the sight of a pool full of dead fish or worse still a nasty smell across the weekend.

"A number of holiday makers also chipped in to help for which we are also grateful. Thanks also to the Donegal County Council staff who facilitated the draining of the pool and the collection of the fish.

"This incident at sea was an unfortunate result of the natural event which occurred earlier in the week but we are glad we were able to deal with the problem quickly thanks to this great community spirit."
