A driver who lost control of his car during a high speed garda chase has been arrested fro dangerous driving.

Gardaí were performing a checkpoint on the outskirts of Kilmacrennan in the early hours of Saturday morning. Upon seeing Gardai, the driver of the Ford Focus (pictured) turned and made off at speed.

The driver reached speeds in excess of 160kph and failed to stop for Gardaí through numerous townlands in Kilmacrennan, Letterkenny and Ramelton.

The driver eventually lost control outside Ramelton village and was arrested for dangerous driving and also processed for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. A passenger in the vehicle made off on foot and was arrested after a short foot chase. A small quantity of illegal drugs were recovered on both occupants.

The driver is to appear before Letterkenny District Court in the coming weeks.
