Peter Casey is seeking permission to construct 24 social homes at Ludden House
Former Presidential candidate and Inishowen business owner Peter Casey has submitted a planning application to Donegal County Council for the construction of 24 social homes in Buncrana.
The Derry-native now residing in Greencastle hopes to build the ‘high specification’ two bedroom apartments on the site of the former Ludden House, which was significantly damaged in a fire two years ago. If granted permission, the development will be situated opposite the North West Golf Club at Luddan.
The former European election candidate said the development comes at a pivotal time, as the Government faces increasing pressure to tackle the national housing crisis, particularly in Donegal, where the defective concrete block crisis has left countless families without secure homes.
“The housing situation in Donegal is beyond urgent,” said Mr. Casey. “I’ve been passionate about making a difference here for years, and this is a real, tangible step forward, not just building homes, but restoring hope.”
The project will involve the demolition of the long-time derelict Ludden House, making way for the modern apartment complex. All units will be built using high-quality timber frame systems and will meet A1 energy efficiency standards.
In addition to providing much needed homes, the development by the Dragons' Den panellist is expected to generate significant local employment during construction and through related trades and services.
The project will be delivered by The Craig Group, a construction firm known for its strong portfolio of residential and commercial developments across Donegal, Northern Ireland, and the UK.
A spokesperson for The Craig Group commented: “This is more than just another development, it’s a community project, built by local people, for local people.”

Mr. Casey said the development is part of his long standing commitment to revitalising Donegal’s housing stock and supporting communities during a time of urgent need.
With planning now submitted, Peter Casey and The Craig Group outlined that it is hopeful for a swift approval, enabling construction to begin and bringing the region one step closer to addressing one of its most critical challenges.
The owner of Claddagh Resources, based in Lisfannon, previously sought to help Ukrainian refugees by accommodating them at Ludden House. Weeks after announcing plans to convert the building into an apartment complex for refugees in April 2023, it was significantly damaged in an arson attack on the night of May 11, 2023.
