New An Post sorting office opens in Burnfoot

The centralisation of sorting and delivery operations in Inishowen has begun with the opening of its new delivery office in Burnfoot.

For many years, An Post’s delivery staff have been based in various locations throughout Inishowen, including Buncrana, Carndonagh, Moville (45 years), and Muff until last Monday, August 18th.

An Post believes that the needs of a modern mail service, where parcels form an ever increasing element of the business, have outstripped those facilities and prompted the search for a modern mail facility to service the various communities across the peninsula.

This week, for the first time, An Post mail staff came together at its new premises in Burnfoot with 27 An Post staff (11 from Carndonagh, seven from Buncrana, five from Moville, and four from Muff) sharing the facility. The move sees the addition of a further two post staff, bringing the staff complement to 29. Several of the current staff have served their own local sorting offices for nearly 30 years.

An Post says it has been upgrading its local mail delivery operations at locations around the country for some years. The postal service states that the custom-fitted delivery offices provide a better quality and more efficient service for customers, better working conditions for staff, and adequately meet the logistical, health and safety, fleet, and security requirements of the modern-day business.

‘We are delighted to be taking up residence in our new base at Burnfoot,” a spokesman for An Post said.

“Given the growth of our parcels and e-commerce business, we needed a modern state of the art facility for our customers and staff. Looking forward to this new chapter in our long history of service to the people of Inishowen.’
