Kayla McEleney achieved maximum points in her Leaving Certificate at Scoil Mhuire and she's now studying biomedical science at Ulster University.
One of Inishowen’s highest-achieving school leavers ever has taken the next step in her academic journey by pursuing a degree in biomedical science.
Kayla McEleney, from Drumfries, will continue her studies at Ulster University Coleraine, where she’ll focus on understanding disease processes and advancing methods for monitoring, diagnosing, treating, and preventing illness.
Former Scoil Mhuire Buncrana student Kayla scored a perfect 625 points in this year’s Leaving Certificate, earning H1 grades across all subjects.
As the only student in Inishowen to reach this standard in 2025, she joins an elite group of students nationally to secure maximum points – an even more extraordinary accomplishment in a year defined by grade deflation.
Throughout her six years at Scoil Mhuire, Kayla distinguished herself not only as an exceptional scholar but also as a valued member of the school community. As Deputy Head Girl, she played a key leadership role, contributing generously to many aspects of school life.
Speaking on behalf of the school community, principal Evelyn McLoughlin commended Kayla’s inspirational dedication and commitment.
“Kayla is an exceptionally capable student, who applied herself consistently throughout her time here in Scoil Mhuire. She successfully balanced her academic responsibilities with her part-time work commitments, while also contributing to school life by performing guitar at various school functions.”
“As a student leader, she put her heart and soul into everything she undertook. She was deeply respected by her teachers and was a wonderful role model for her peers. We have no doubt that Kayla will be a trailblazer in her field and we will follow her future achievements with great interest,” principal McLoughlin added.

The Board of Management joined the Scoil Mhuire head in extending its heartfelt congratulations to Kayla on her remarkable achievement, wishing her every success in her studies and future career.
Kayla is the eldest daughter of Joanne and Christopher McEleney, who strongly supported her educational journey and played a key role in her success. Christopher, who has his own inspirational story, returned to education later in life and now holds a PHD in Chemistry and Maths.
Meanwhile, Kayla is no stranger to high achievement. In 2022, she was the recipient of a prestigious award from the University of Galway for achieving a distinction in her Junior Cycle Irish Examination, one of only 2.6 per cent of students in the country to be honoured that year.
She is a former pupil of Scoil Naomh Padraig in Drumfries, and works part-time at Nancy’s Barn, Ballyliffin.
