Breaking the silence on domestic abuse in Inishowen: A New Year and a fresh start

The New Year can be a very difficult time for victims of domestic abuse, but help is at hand with Lifeline Inishowen.

As the New Year begins, many of us reflect on fresh starts, New Year's resolutions and hope for a better year ahead.

Yet for some in our community, the turning of the calendar does not automatically bring safety or peace.

Domestic abuse remains a hidden reality for many individuals and families across Inishowen, and Lifeline Inishowen says the New Year is an important moment to continue its vital campaign to break the silence and reduce the stigma.

The Carndonagh-based support charity is reminding people that domestic abuse is not limited to physical violence. It can include emotional, psychological, sexual, and financial abuse, as well as coercive control.

It can happen to anyone, regardless of age, gender, background, or circumstance. Too often, those experiencing abuse feel isolated, ashamed, or afraid to reach out. Silence can make the situation feel inescapable, but support is closer than many realise.

Lifeline says the New Year can be a powerful time to take the first step toward change. Reaching out for help is not a sign of weakness; it is an act of courage. Whether you are experiencing abuse yourself or are concerned about someone you know, confidential support is available locally.
