Renewed concerns have been raised about road safety at the Maginn Avenue junction in Buncrana following another traffic collision that occurred on Friday night.
Another crash over the weekend has sparked fresh safety fears at a busy Buncrana junction, after a vehicle ploughed into a roadside fence on Maginn Avenue.
South Inishowen Councillor Fionán Bradley said he was alerted to the incident by concerned residents and described the outcome as a lucky escape.
“Once again, the fence has taken the impact,” he said. “Thankfully, it's only the fence that is destroyed, but this could have been unimaginably worse.”
The collision occurred at a junction that serves as a key route between residential areas and Buncrana’s main street. Councillor Bradley said the thought of a pedestrian being present at the time of impact was deeply troubling and highlights the ongoing risk to pedestrians in the area.
"Hundreds of people use this footpath daily," the Fianna Fáil Councillor said. "It shakes me to the core to think what could have happened if someone had been walking past as the vehicle collided with the fence."
With traffic expected to increase over the bank holiday weekend, Councillor Bradley has issued a strong appeal to motorists to slow down and drive with care. “I’m asking motorists to please drive carefully and cautiously on our roads, particularly this bank holiday weekend."

Gardaí are currently investigating the collision which occurred sometime Friday night or early Saturday morning and are asking anyone who witnessed the incident, or who may have dashcam or CCTV footage from the area on the night of the crash, to contact Buncrana Garda Station.
