The Malin Head Heritage Group is gathering stories and recollections of the traditional Malin Head sports day, held every August 15,  the Feast of the Assumption.

The much-loved community event, once tied to the Malin Well Fair, has featured races, rivalries, funfair attractions, tea tents, and family reunions for generations.

It has been held in recent years in Doc’s Field at The Seaview Tavern, Malin Head and it brings together locals and visitors alike.

To help preserve this vital piece of Malin Head history, share your memories by answering any of the following:

Your earliest memories? Where were the sports held back then? How old were you, who did you go with, and what were you wearing?

Standout sports days? Funny moments, mishaps, or rows?

Old events no longer run (e.g., bicycle races, long/high jump, horseshoe throwing)?

Star athletes or performers from your era?

Football & tug-o-war teams: Where from? Prizes? Referees? Townland/parish rivalries?

Perpetual trophies?

Side attractions: Rifle range, ricket wheel (operator & prizes?), swing boats, bands?

Volunteers: Field setup, gates, race organizers, MCs, prize-givers?

Tea Tent: Who ran it? Baking, supplies (water, milk, tea, sugar) from your home?

Toilets and facilities—who organized them?

Family from abroad returning home for the day—how long did they stay?

The stories will help build a lasting record of this special annual day. Please, share your memories as all contributions are welcome, no memory too small or too old!
