Public representatives from across the political spectrum joined residents in Buncrana to demand urgent action on long-promised refurbishment works at the town’s community hospital last Saturday afternoon.
Frustration over delays brought a large crowd together outside the facility, where councillors and TDs criticised the HSE for failing to deliver on repeated commitments about the project timeline.
Sinn Féin TD Pádraig Mac Lochlainn praised the turnout and highlighted the hospital’s long history within the community.
He noted that the facility was originally secured through local fundraising efforts and argued that the people of Buncrana had a strong sense of ownership over it.
Deputy Mac Lochlainn said delays had recently been confirmed through official correspondence, describing the situation as deeply frustrating.
“We want this back in our hands as soon as possible,” he said.
100% Redress Party TD Charles Ward said communities across Donegal were too often forced to protest in order to protect essential services.
He argued that moving elderly residents away from their local community for care was “unacceptable.”
Mr. Ward acknowledged party affiliation won't matter as all five Donegal TDs will work together to ensure work is carried out as soon as possible.
“We will be working together, everybody will come together, all the TDs are going to come together, and we're going to fight tooth and nail.”
While three Inishowen Councillors also addressed the gathering, including Joy Beard, Jack Murray, and Fionán Bradley, all of whom criticised the repeated delays and called for immediate progress on the refurbishment project.

Speakers agreed they would continue to work together across party lines to press the HSE and the Minister for Health to ensure construction begins without further delay.
