Moville men set to learn how to be stand-up guys, with new fall prevention course

The Moville Men's Shed committee is welcoming members of the public, both men and women, to a free health and wellbeing course, beginning on April 21 next.

A new five-week Health and Wellbeing Programme aimed at those aged 55 and over is set to take place at Moville Men’s Shed this spring, with organisers placing a strong emphasis on fall prevention and maintaining mobility in later life.

The initiative, delivered through the Inishowen Development Partnership’s Healthy Active Rural Communities Project, will run from April 21 to May 19, with weekly Tuesday sessions running from 10am until 1pm.

The free programme, open to 15 to 20 participants, is designed to support both physical health and social wellbeing, encouraging attendees to take part in all sessions while also providing time for tea and conversation.

While the course covers a wide range of topics, including citizens’ advice, health checks and local history, a key focus will be on reducing the risk of falls among older people.

A dedicated session on May 5 will see a physiotherapist lead practical discussions on balance exercises, home strength routines and appropriate footwear, alongside raising awareness of common fall risks.

Organisers say this element is particularly important, as falls remain one of the leading causes of injury and loss of independence in older adults.

Additional sessions include a health ‘MOT’ check with a public health nurse and a community crafts workshop with a local carpenter, with the overall aim of promoting safer, healthier and more connected living within the local community.
