Drilling near source blamed for ongoing Culdaff Boil Water Notice

Culdaff remains under a boil water notice

Residents in Culdaff remain under a Boil Water Notice for two months as remedial works continue to address water quality issues affecting the local supply.

Uisce Éireann has confirmed that elevated turbidity levels in the water were caused by recent test drilling works carried out close to the water source. These activities disturbed underground materials, allowing fine sediments to enter the water supply, resulting in increased turbidity levels.

The increase in turbidity affected the treatment process at Culdaff Water Treatment Plant, prompting the notice, which has been in place since 17 February. Approximately 1,300 customers, including those on the Three Glens Group Water Scheme, are impacted.

Uisce Éireann stated that protecting public health remains its top priority. Monitoring of the water supply is ongoing, while remedial works are being carried out at the treatment plant to restore normal service. The utility is working closely with the HSE, with all test results under continuous review before any decision is made to lift the notice.

A spokesperson for Uisce Éireann, Damien O’Sullivan, acknowledged the disruption caused to homes and businesses, saying crews are working to resolve the issue as quickly and safely as possible.

“Public health remains Uisce Éireann’s number one priority, and this notice is in place to protect everyone on the supply. Our teams are continuing to progress the necessary works at the water treatment plant, and we thank all those affected for their patience.”

In the meantime, customers are reminded that all water intended for drinking, food preparation, brushing teeth, and making ice must be boiled before use. Water can still be used for washing and sanitation purposes, but care should be taken, particularly with young children.

Uisce Éireann has said it cannot yet confirm when the notice will be lifted, stressing that it will remain in place until consistent, satisfactory water quality results are achieved in consultation with the HSE.
