Carndonagh Traders Association accept their award from Trevor Ringland, Co-operation Ireland, and John Hogan, Chairman, IPB Insurance
Carndonagh Traders Association triumphed at the prestigious Pride of Place community awards on Friday evening at a gala ceremony in Armagh city.
The association took first place in the ‘Population - 1500-4000’ category, with judges particularly impressed with the range of services they offer.
“The association told a great story of endeavour, resilience, initiative, partnership, and success of a town which decided to get up and use the resources and location to improve business and community life,” organisers said.
“This market town, steeped in history and heritage, recognises the huge value of its people and places. It has a dynamic leadership team working closely with the council and is very proud of its place. Its many events, tourist office, business initiatives and excellent regeneration plans all point to a very bright future.”
Elsewhere in Donegal Twin Towns Community Garden, the Indian Community Centre Letterkenny, Church Hill Community Development Group and Ballyshannon Regeneration Group were also nominated.
The awards, hosted by UTV’s Pamela Ballentine, took place in front of 400 community volunteers from across the island. The awards were delivered in partnership with Armagh, Banbridge, and Craigavon Borough Council.
Sponsored by IPB Insurance, the Pride of Place competition was initiated 21 years ago through a Co-operation Ireland programme to acknowledge the invaluable work undertaken by volunteers and those involved in local community development. It has grown into the largest competition recognising community development achievements on the island of Ireland.
President Michael D. Higgins, Joint Patron of Co-operation Ireland, said the awards played an important role.
He said: “The Pride of Place awards are a most important initiative, reminding us that creating societies that are ethical and inclusive is a task for all of our citizens, of all ages and circumstances.”
