The Inishowen Rivers Trust is working to help the community in Clonmany avoid future damaging floods
The Inishowen Rivers Trust is holding a public meeting on a new project aimed at slowing the flow of water through the river catchments in Clonmany.
The community discussion on the Buffer+ project is taking place at the Clonmany Market House on Thursday, December 7 at 6.30pm.
The new project follows on from work the Inishowen Rivers Trust did in 2021 with local landowners in the Clonmany area on natural flood management (NFM).
This work was aimed at helping to control flooding in local rivers through the use of leaky dams and check dams. Leaky dams are useful during floods to slow the flow of water through the river catchment and delay the release of this water over a longer time period, meaning that there is less of a flood peak downstream.
Clonmany suffered significant damage during the severe flooding of August 2017. The Inishowen Rivers Trust says it is committed to helping the community in Clonmany to avoid future damaging floods and has partnered with the All-Ireland Rivers Trust on the new project. This project will extend the NFM project reach from farmland further up into the peatlands around Clonmany to help slow the flow of water.
Places at the discussion can be booked on the Eventbrite website. More details are available on the Inishowen Rivers Trust Facebook page.
