Anthony McHenry played in the music halls around Inishowen
Tributes have been paid to Inishopwen traditional musician Anthony McHenry who has died aged in his 90s.
From Glenagivney, the button accordion player was a well-known figure in the area and played music around Inishowen.
In a tribute, the Inishowen Traditional Music Project, which has collected some of his music for its archive, said Mr McHenry had mastered his instrument in his early days. He played in music halls around the peninsula and at one time he was one of the main sources of music for the Moville and Greencastle areas.
“His repertoire was heavily influenced by Jimmy Shand. His house, which was known as the music house, was a mecca for all local musicians and until very recently, tunes would be heard late into the night reverberating around the Mossy Glen,” the Inishowen Traditional Music Project said in a tribute on social media.
“We send our sincere condolences to all of Anthony's family and friends. He will be sorely missed but his music will live long in our memories.”
Mr McHenry’s funeral Mass took place in St Columba’s Church, Ballinacrae on Wednesday morning and he was laid to rest in the adjoining graveyard.
