Moville GAA Club’s brand new Community Gym facility at Carrick Field has been officially opened.

Cllr Martin Farren did the honours on behalf of the project’s funders – Donegal County Council’s Community Recognition Fund, and opened the state-of-the-art facility which includes a purpose-built strength and conditioning room and a separate cardio fitness suite.

The gym is located in the old Gaelscoil premises on at Carrick Field and is intended to serve both the Club’s players and the wider community – as Moville GAA’s Healthy Club Officer John Peto explained: "Our Club has been growing fast over the last number of years, and we have a lot of members now bringing their children to the club who have never played the game themselves. We wanted to build a facility that would not just help our teams and players to develop their fitness, but would also encourage non-players and the wider community to come and improve their health and wellbeing at the Club, maybe while their children are training on the pitch, or just as some healthy social activity."

The gym was funded by the Council, with local contractors the Craig Group undertaking key work to strengthen the floor of the building, but was also supported by work from a range of local businesses including Boyle Bespoke Joinery, CMG Windows, Kevin Robb Painting, McKenna’s Londis Drung,  and MMD Valeting and Detailing at various stages of the fitout.

Opening the gym, Cllr Martin Farren praised the quality of the facilities and the community ethos that underpins the project "This facility needs to be seen to be believed, the investment from the Council has been enhanced by the efforts of the Club and its brilliant to see that the people of Moville, and the teams that the Club puts out on the pitch will benefit from this work for years to come. Congratulations to Moville GAA and everyone involved.’

The gym will be a key asset for the Club as part of their development and growth into the future. Club Chairman Sean Faulkner welcomed the opening as part of Moville GAA’s continued growth.

He said: "Our membership increases every year and we work hard to offer the best training and facilities that we can to our members, and the whole community that uses the Clubhouse, the pitches and works with us through the year. We are very grateful to Donegal County Council for supporting us to develop the old Gaelscoil Cois Feabhail building and to ensure that the Club and community can benefit from it as part of our ongoing development plan for the Club."
