The director of a hospital in Sierra Leone has said the money raised by a charity concert in Moville will have a “significant impact” on the care of patients.

The variety concert held in St Eugene's Hall in Moville on May 3 raised €3,200 for the Holy Spirit Hospital in  Makeni.

The concert was organised by local retired nurse Rose McDaid who worked as a nurse trainer at the hospital from 2012 to 2014.

Makeni city is situated in the Northern Province of Sierra Leone and has a population of more than 124,000.

The hospital was opened in 2002 by a medical doctor and two nurses in two rooms. It now hosts an eighty-bed unit, providing medical, surgical, paediatric and maternity care. The hospital also provides a base for visiting overseas missions which are an important support for the hospital and local community.

Dr Patrick E Turay, the hopsital’s medical director, expressed his  “immense gratitude” for the “generous financial donation”.

In a letter of thanks to those who contributed, he said: “Your generous donation will have a significant impact on our patient care. The funds will be used to purchase essential drugs, thereby improving the overall health and well-being of our patients.

“We are deeply thankful for your support and look forward to a continued partnership in our mission to deliver quality healthcare. Your contribution is instrumental in our efforts, and we are hopeful for the future.”

Ms McDaid thanked everyone who took part in the event and helped to organise or made a financial contribution. She also thanked the audience who tuned up on the night and the St Eugene's Hall committee.
