Tributes have been paid to Inishowen musician, composer and teacher Dinny McLaughlin who has passed away at the age of 89.

Known as a fiddler with a unique style, and a dancer, he taught traditional music to countless young people across the north-west over decades and is credited with inspiring many to keep playing music throughout their lives.

He came to prominence in the 1970s through the traditional music group Aileach in which he played  fiddle, tin whistle and flute.

In January last year he attended the National Concert Hall in Dublin to hear his suite of music performed by the Inishowen Trad Orchestra and Choir in front of President Michael D Higgins.

Those who paid tribute to him include Donegal musician Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh who said “a mantle of sorrow lies over Donegal”.

Her band Altan posted that he was “a huge influence on us growing up in Donegal, he was an inspirational teacher, a mentor and most important, a true friend”.

Inishowen group The Henry Girls described him as “a true musical legend”. “His contributions to the tradition will never be forgotten, here in Inishowen and far beyond. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come, and we are so grateful for all he taught us over the years.”

Cairdeas Na BhFidiléirí described him as a “fiddle player, teacher, composer, dancer and much more”. “His influence on traditional music was enormous,” the organisation said.

The Inishowen Traditional Music Project said its members have had “the privilege and fun” of working with him on many projects over the years.

“Through his devotion to teaching, collecting and composing the music, song and dance of the Peninsula is alive and all the richer for his nurturing.”

His funeral will takeplace on Friday with requiem Mass at 11am in St Mary’s Church, Cockhill.
