Carndonagh's St Patrick's Day walk to remember Tiernan Doherty-Kelly

The late Tiernan Doherty-Kelly

This year's annual Carndonagh to Malin St Patrick’s Day walk will be in memory of the late Tiernan Doherty-Kelly.

The 18-year-old tragically died in a road accident near Buncrana last December. The fatal collision took place on the R244, known as the Mountain Road, between Buncrana and Carndonagh. Mr Doherty was the driver and sole occupant of the car that crashed.

He was one of seven fatalities on Inishowen roads last year, making it one of the worst years for road deaths on the peninsula in recent memory.

The Carn community will once again come together, as they do every year at St Patrick’s Day, but this time it will be to remember their beloved young sporting star. Tiernan had risen through the ranks with Carndonagh FC and CLG Charn Domhnaigh.

Last year's charity walk was also in memory of a young Carndonagh man. The walk took place on the 20th anniversary of Shane Toye’s death and raised over €16,000 for two local charities, with monies raised going to the Donegal branch of the Irish Kidney Association and the Friends of Inishowen Hospice.

The traditional St Patrick’s Day walk from Carndonagh to Malin will get underway from The Diamond at 4pm on Monday, March 17. Anyone who wishes to purchase sponsor cards for this year's walk can do so at the Mason’s in Carndonagh.
